1. Season pork chops with salt, pepper and garlic powder on both sides.
2. In a skillet, heat vegetable oil and butter over medium-high heat. Add pork chops and brown evenly on each side, turning once (about 4 to 5 minutes per side).
3. Pour in red wine, then add bay leaf and balsamic vinegar. Simmer, uncovered, for 20 minutes, or until chops are tender.
4. Remove chops and let the sauce cook for additional 2 to 3 minutes (or until reduced to desired consistency).
5. Coat chops in the sauce and transfer to serving plates.
