Cuban Ground Beef and Tomato Picadillo Recipe

This Cuban Ground Beef and Tomato Picadillo is one of my favorite easy ground beef recipes, perfect for busy weeknights. It’s a flavorful meat sauce loaded with spices, olives, and capers, making it a hearty meal for the whole family.

My entire family enjoys this dinner recipe, and it has become one of the favorite dishes in our home. Cooked in just one skillet, this pure comfort food is easy to prepare, making it the ideal choice for a simple, delicious, and wholesome quick dinner.

It’s also a great recipe for meal prep - double or triple the original recipe and enjoy leftovers the next day, or freeze some for next time. A true family favorite!

Notes

Allow this hearty ground beef and tomato picadillo to cool completely before transferring it to an airtight container.

Store in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. The next day, to reheat, warm it in a skillet over medium heat, adding a splash of water if needed to maintain moisture.

You can use tomato sauce, fresh blended tomatoes (1:1, with the skin removed), or tomato paste. If using tomato paste, mix one part tomato paste with one part water to achieve the right consistency.

Instructions

1. In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef (directly to the hot skillet no oil needed) and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spatula as it cooks. Drain any excess liquid.

2. Meanwhile, finely chop onion, core and dice jalapeno (remove the seeds for less heat, or leave some seeds in for added spiciness, depending on your taste), and mince garlic.

3. Add the prepared vegetables to the skillet along with cumin, oregano, and cinnamon. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Cook for about 5 minutes, until the onions are softened.

4. Stir in the tomato sauce (or blended tomatoes), capers, sliced green olives, and the bay leaf into the beef mixture. Cover the skillet and reduce heat to low. If there isn't enough liquid, you can add a couple of tablespoons of water (beef broth or chicken broth), but more will be released as it simmers. Let the meat mixture simmer for about 15 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.

5. Remove the bay leaf and serve the picadillo with mashed potatoes, over rice, elbow macaroni, or your favorite type of pasta.
